Distance Learning

distance learning
Bridges for Women Online offers “distance learning" to help women who are not able to come to the Victoria Campus for classes. Women develop sustainable, long-term career goals through the BFWOnline curriculum, which is tailored to suit her goals, interests and skills.

Learners are self-directed and work through the program at their own pace, interacting online using 24 hour discussion forums, real-time chatroom texting and email. Individual coaching takes place via email, Skype and our toll-free number. Assignments and projects combine online work with community involvement and research.

BFWOnline activities include:
  • Personal development skills, communication, assertiveness training and conflict resolution
  • Employment readiness, exploring career options, job search skills
  • Individualized personal support
  • Stress management and effective workplace behaviour
  • Exploring the impact of abuse on employment-related barriers
The curriculum has five main categories:

Addressing Histories of Abuse

This part of the curriculum focuses on understanding the cycle of abuse and the impact of abuse on employability. Participants work on self-esteem, values and self-advocacy, communication, assertiveness, conflict resolution skills.

Technological Skills
This course strengthens the learner's ability to use technology in employment and personal situations. By using a variety of learning tools and becoming skilled online communicators, learners increase and strengthen their technological skill base.

Individual Study
Each participant develops individual short-term goals and action steps that support their immediate and long-term work towards personal and economic independence. The women implement their plans to achieve concrete, measurable successes that support their pre-employment process at Bridges.

Career Exploration
Students assess their skills, strengths, previous experiences, preferences, learning styles and passions. This assessment includes the Myers Briggs Type Indicator assessment and development of resume building blocks. The focus is on developing a long-term, sustainable career vision that promotes successful, permanent labour force attachment.

Workplace Skills
BFWOnline provides students with an opportunity to participate in a virtual workplace setting. By communicating and completing assignments online, women develop workplace skills. Expectations of participation, goal-setting and other workplace norms are maintained in a supportive learning environment. Learners research, interview and explore volunteering and employment opportunities available to them locally, with the online learning environment as a support for their activities.

Distance Learning
"Learning from home gives me the freedom to schedule around my personal healing work with my counsellor. I can go at my own pace, but I still have to practice planning my days and weeks." - learner
